Een vergissing (A misunderstanding)
Johannes Kneppelhout (1814-1885)
The well-known Dutch writer/humorist Johannes Kneppelhout wrote around a dozen letters to Professor Van Vloten, an authority in the field of literary criticism. Klikspaan, Kneppelhout’s pen name, gave rise to some confusion. Van Vloten took him for another poet, P.A. de Génestet, and this led him to begin his letter as follows: Gij smelt, naar uit uwe vriendelijke toezending blijkt, mijne individu eenigzins met de Génestet zamen; mijn belangstelling in hem, meent gij, is zoo levendig, dat ik eene beoordeling van zijn werk ontvang alsof het die van mijn eigen gold. (You seem to fuse, as appears from your friendly dispatch, my person somewhat with that of De Génestet; my interest in him, according to you, is so lively that I receive an appraisal of his work as if it should apply to my own.)
Letter to Johannes van Vloten, 27 November 1852
