Before modern mass media existed, laws and regulations were proclaimed by printing them on loose sheets that were posted everywhere. Thousands of placards rolled from the presses of Dutch printers in early modern times. This placard, issued by the administrators of Middelburg on 9 June 1759, confirms that non-guild members were, under certain conditions, allowed to sell salted meat remains from the Dutch East India Company.
