- Op de voorgrond zijn twee verharde wegen te zien. 'Denkend aan Holland zie ik brede rivieren traag door oneindig laagland gaan.' Deze bekende dichtregel van Marsman geeft precies aan waar het in Nederland om draait: water. Deze foto draait ook om water en wel om een polder, de Polder Oostzaan bij Zaandam. Een polder is een gebied met waterlopen, waarvan de verbinding met het buitenwater is of kan worden verbroken. De waterstand wordt door middel van bouwwerken vrijwel onafhankelijk van de stand van het omringende water op een bepaald peil gehouden. Meestal is er een onderscheid tussen zomer- en winterpeil. Een goed zomerpeil is meestel 20 à 30 centimeter hoger dan het winterpeil. Als de stand van het water in de polder hoger staat dan het waterpeil in het omringende gebied kan men via natuurlijke weg water lozen. Dit gebeurt dan door duikers of uitwateringssluizen. Als de polder lager ligt dan het buitenwater, dan is men aangewezen op bemaling. Het komt ook voor dat er water in de polder bij moet, om de vaarmogenlijkheden te behouden. De polder Oostzaan behoort tot de tweede categorie, het waterpeil ligt lager dan in het omringende land. Als bemalingswerktuig gebruiken ze hier een poldermolen.
