- Molens kan men onderverdelen in windmolens en watermolens. Een windmolen heeft wieken die aangedreven worden door de wind en bij watermolens wordt het molenrad aangedreven door stromend water. De molen op de foto is de Hercules aan de ringvaart bij de Kalverpolder in Zaandam-Oost. Op de achtergrond is de Zaanse Schans te zien (ook in Zaandam). Deze molen is een Amerikaanse windmolen, maar wordt in de volksmond een Wind-Watermolen genoemd. Deze benaming heeft de molen te danken aan het feit dat hij aangedreven wordt door de wind, maar water pompt uit de Kalverpolder. Naast de aandrijfkracht worden molens ook nog ingedeeld naar functie, zoals korenmolens, papiermolens en houtzaagmolens. De Hercules valt onder de poldermolens. Poldermolens worden gebruikt voor de waterbeheersing.
