1975-2001: Dutch History Photo Commissions > Document the Netherlands: Sundays

Voetbalsupporters bij dug-out, 1998, fotograaf Ariens

Exhibition: 1998

Once Sundays had a fixed structure, buttressed by tradition, custom and social control. Nowadays, people have an endless number of options of how to spend their leisure time. To party or to have a long lie-in, to go to church, to play a sport, to laze away the day or to spend it working, to go shopping, visit somebody: anything goes. A traditional day of rest or not, everybody has their own Sunday feeling.

Catrien Ariëns mingled with the Dutch on Sundays between 1 June 1997 and 1 March 1998 and captured their activities.

This photo commission is the first in a series the Rijksmuseum organises in conjunction with the daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad under the title  'Document the Netherlands’.
