In the volume of poetry Van de passielooze lelie (1901) Frederik van Eeden expressed his longing to commune with God as He manifests Himself in music, nature and selfless love through enduring sorrow and fear of death. Critics were divided about this volume: according to the weekly De Amsterdammer, Van Eeden himself was half apostle and half preacher, but the literary magazine Den Gulden Winckel called the author a great poet and a sublime mystic.
