Broadside ballads > Songs for special occasions
A category of broadside appeared in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century that was meant for use at special occasions, especially for parties.
Bookshops and novelty stores sold leaflets and broadsides for special occasions like weddings. Wedding songs were handed out during the party and sung by the whole group. The leaflets would also contain other kinds of performance, like skits and speeches, besides the songs themselves. These texts - which were generally written by professional authors - would sometimes include marked passages that allowed for a degree of personalisation, like the inclusion of the bride and groom's names.
A similar type of song was written for a single special occasion. Memorials or anniversaries of special occasions fall into this category, which includes such occasions as the centenary of a typographical society or the establishment of a monument. Leaflets with these songs were mostly distributed locally by clubs or committees. These very collections would also include union songs, general club songs and songs that were popular at the time.
