Broadside ballads > 21. Van de handel - About trade
There's a lot of gossip about the affairs of young singles. Even the most virtuous behaviour can be interpreted incorrectly. People who spread a lot of slander about should therefore think about who does the most harm: they do that themselves.
This song first appeared at the beginning of the nineteenth century on a broadside printed in Gent by Van Paemel. Only in secondary literature is a composer's name connected to the song: that of Joseph Sadones, an extraordinarily productive Flemish songwriter who lived from 1755 until 1816.
'Van de handel' was often referred to as the melody to be used for other songs. Its melody was first referenced in Gent in 1683.
