Broadside ballads > 12. Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser - Austrian national anthem

Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser

The melody however is mainly known as the German national anthem. It was declared the country's national anthem in 1922 with the lyric 'Deutschland, Deutschland über alles', written by Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben. The song is still Germany's national anthem, although only the third verse ('Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit') has been used since World War II.

New lyrics have been written to this melody in the Netherlands as well, especially in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. These have all been patriotic songs and party songs. Since the war, the melody has been too emotionally charged for re-use.

No new recording of the melody was made for this website.
