The Dutch East Indies in photographs, 1860-1940 > How to search

Searching by place name:
After the Dutch departed from Indonesia, the names of many provinces, towns and villages changed. Moreover, the spelling rules of the Indonesian language have been revised a number of times. The place-names used in the 1930s and published in the Atlas van Tropisch Nederland (Atlas of the Dutch Tropics) by the Topographic Department of the Dutch East Indies, Batavia, in 1938 appear in the ‘description’ field.

Searching by photographer:
If known the name of the photographer is mentioned. Toekang Portret: 100 Jaar fotografie in Nederlands Indië 1839-1939 (Toekang Potret: 100 Years of Photography in the Dutch Indies 1839 - 1939) by Anneke Groeneveld and others, published by Fragment, Amsterdam, in 1989, provides a basic list of commercial photographers in the Dutch East Indies.

Searching in the KITLV-website:
More advanced search options, for instance the use of keywords, are available on the website of the KITLV.
