The Tropenmuseum wants to show the general public as much of its collection as possible by various means; this includes not only the items on display but also those kept in storage. A wide selection has been made for The Memory and is quite representative of the total collection.
The theme of the sub-collection is the collective, national memory of the Dutch colonies seen from the perspective of the World Fairs. As the years passed, the way in which the Netherlands presented itself as a colonizer began to chance.
