The Amsterdam Municipal Archives may be consulted by anybody who wants to know more about the history of his or her Amsterdam family, house, enterprise or neighbourhood.
Every year some 30,000 people find an answer to their queries about the city of Amsterdam in the reading rooms of the Municipal Archives. These archives are a historic documentation centre in the widest sense of the word. They preserve not only the records and collections of the municipal authorities, but also of many private institutions and enterprises. In total, records and collections cover a length of some 35 kilometres.
