Photographers De Spaarnestad > Field photographer: Hugo Wilmar
The photographers working in the field often made photographic reports covering daily life and background stories, and occasionally news of topical interest. Most of the work of the Dutch photographer Hugo Wilmar (1923-1957) fits into the latter category. After having trained as a professional photographer in the United States during World War II and having worked for the army, he was employed by De Spaarnestad between 1947 and 1951. During the Indonesian war of independence, he recorded the Dutch police actions for the magazines Katholieke Illustratie and Panorama. Later, he produced photographic reports in Africa, the Netherlands Antilles and other locations for these magazines.
