Panorama Mesdag Collection

A collection of the Panorama Mesdag

Panorama Mesdag is the oldest surviving panorama in the world in its original form and at its original location. The marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915) was commissioned by a Belgian company in 1880 to make the panorama. The canvas is the largest painting in the Netherlands.

H.W. Mesdag, 'At anchor'.

The absolute highlight of  Panorama Mesdag is of course the panorama itself. But the museum also houses a number of other interesting collections: paintings, watercolor paintings, drawings and sketches by Mesdag and his wife, Sientje Mesdag-van Houten, and a modest collection of photographs (portraits, interiors and photos of Scheveningen). This digital collection focuses on these less well-known items.
