Atlas Schoemaker > About the collection
Over the years, Andries Schoemaker created a collection consisting of several volumes with approximately 9000 pages, with more than 2600 color drawings. After the death of his son Gerrit - who died a year after his father - the collection was auctioned and was so dispersed. The collection of The Memory consists of all the color illustrations from the dispersed manuscripts of father and son Schoemaker. The entire Atlas, as Schoemaker's work is referred to, was released on microfiche by MMF Publications in 2000, at the initiative of the Koninklijk Oudheidkundig Genootschap (Royal Dutch Archaeological Society). More than 2600 color illustrations were then put on CD-ROM thanks to support by VSB Fund.
Many of the buildings, villages and towns immortalized in Schoemaker's Atlas did not stand the test of time. The collection provides a unique source of historical topographic information, giving a look at the Netherlands of the early 18th century.
