Poster by Frans Mettes, dated 1976, commissioned by the Netherlands Institute for Safety and its sister organizations in Belgium and Luxembourg. The Safety Museum in Amsterdam started publishing ‘safety posters’ in 1922 to provide information on the work floor. In 1953, the name was changed to the Safety Institute. In the 1980s, it became the Dutch Institute for Working Conditions (NIA), which is now part of TNO.

From the mid-1970s onwards, an extensive series of collaborative posters were created by the Benelux countries. More than 1000 Dutch posters on occupational health have been included in the IISG collection. Stairs or ladders were often depicted to warn against calamities and risks. Frans Mettes (1909-1984) designed more than 30 posters between 1955 and 1981 for the Safety Institute.
