F.A. Kuhn werkte vanaf 1816 in Suriname als arts. Bij de publicatie van dit boek in 1828 was hij, blijkens het titelblad: Chirurgijn en chef Z.M. troepen en hospitalen te Surinamen mitsgaders stads doctor en phijsicus aldaar. De titelplaat (gesigneerd: D.Veelwaard sculp.) laat negerslaven op een plantage zien. Kuhn schreef kritisch over hun huisvesting, behandeling, straffen, voedsel en kleding. Aan het slot van het werk is het Reglement voor chirurgijns toegevoegd, waarin ook tarieven voor de verschillende behandelingen. Een visite overdag 'bij blanken en vrijlieden' kostte 75 cent, bij slaven 35 cent, amputeren van een vinger 15 gulden, een keizersnede waarbij moeder en kind in leven bleven 300 gulden (maar in geval beiden overleden slechts 75 gulden). Het boek bevat ook een afbeelding van een waterzuiveringsvat en twee plattegronden voor een plantageziekenhuis.
