- This strange painting was probably created in the winter of 1885-1886. At that time, Van Gogh was taking lessons at the art academy in Antwerp, where a skeleton was used in the study of human anatomy. This skull was certainly meant as a joke. It may also represent an ironic comment on the traditional methods of academic training of which Vincent quickly tired.
