- Het Zuiderzeemuseum heeft bijna driehonderd merklappen. Enkele daarvan zijn 17de-eeuws, een groot aantal 18de- en de rest is 19de-eeuws. Merklappen werden gemaakt door meisjes tussen de zes en twaalf jaar. Dat deden ze niet uit tijdverdrijf, maar uit pure noodzaak. Alle textiel werd tot laat in de 19de eeuw thuis genaaid, versierd, gemerkt en versteld. Op merklappen werden de benodigde technieken daarvoor geoefend. Het borduren van het alfabet had ook tot doel de meisjes te leren lezen. Ze leerden Gotische letters omdat de bijbel in dit schrift was gedrukt. Een merklap is dus geen volkskunst, maar een leermiddel.
