City Theater Amsterdam, 1935-1936. Architects: Jan Wils and O. Rosendahl. Photographer: unknown.
In 1935, the City Theater was the biggest movie house in the Netherlands. A steel skeleton covered by large sheets of glass and a glass encased tower gave the building a spectacular appearance, especially at night.
The interior radiated unprecedented luxury. The entrance was richly designed in order to prepare visitors to the transition from the workaday world to the glamour of Hollywood. Jan Wils had the foresight to realize that movies were still considered to be similar to theatrical performances, and that cinema architecture went along with this misconception. True movie house architecture would only be possible once films had gained the status of an independent art form.
