This illustration depicts a 20th-century lithographic reproduction of the well-known view of Mexico City by Juan Gomez de Trasmonte. He was a Spanish-Mexican architect who designed several cathedrals in Mexico and was involved in the construction of the governor’s palace.
In 1628, he drew this map with a view of the city. The Dutch painter Johannes Vingboons based his extensively copied aquarelle paintings (ca. 1650) of Mexico City, Acapulco and Veracruz on the maps of Gómez de Trasmonte.
