A pilgrim on his way to Fujiyama
This is a typical example of a nineteenth century Japanese studio photograph. The pilgrim stands in a painted décor of a landscape featuring the Fujiyama volcano. It was taken in the studio of Kusakabe Kimbei, a master at hand coloring photographs. In 1881, he opened his own studio in Yokohama and sold hand colored prints of negatives from well-known photographers like Felice Beato, Stillfried and Uchida Kuichi. The greater part of his clients were travelers and other foreigners in Japan.
