- Foto, zw/w. Een gedeelte van Lhasa, vanuit het noorden gefotografeerd. Links van het midden staan enkele witte gebouwen. Hierachter is een donker, recht gebouw zichtbaar met een plat dak. Dit zou het voormalige paleis van de Tibetaanse koningen zijn, genaamd Gadan-Kansar (ben die naam nog niet tegengekomen). — Dit is het enige gebouw in Lhasa dat niet gewit is en was de residentie van Gyur me nam gyal, de laatste koning van Tibet. Deze kwam in opstand tegen de Dalai Lama die toen al politieke macht wilde hebben. Door interventie van de Chinese keizer Kanghsi werd de koning vermoord en de 7de Dalai Lama geinstalleerd. Deze werd door de Chinezen zowel koning van Tibet als de spirituele leider. De keizer Kanghsi verbande alle mensen van het paleis en bepaalde dat het gebouw moest blijven zoals het was (donker) terwijl alle andere huizen gewit moesten worden. (Deniker, 553) — Rechts van dit gebouw is het dak van de Ramoche tempel te zien. Deze tempel was ongeveer gelijk klaar met de Jokhang, midden 7de eeuw. De tempel werd gebouwd door de vrouw van koning Srongtsen Gampo, de Chinese prinses Wencheng. Toen het beeld van Jowo Sakyamuni na een barre tocht in Lhasa aankwam, bleef de kar in op zanderig stuk land steken. Wencheng bepaalde dat onder de grond het paradijs van de watergoden gelegen was. Als een offer aan de koning van dat paradijs, de koning van de Naga's, liet zij op deze plek een klooster bouwen om het standbeeld te huizen. Oorspronkelijk was het een tempel geheel in Chinese stijl gebouwd. Het beeld heeft hier gestaan tot 649-676 toen het uit vrees voor een invasie naar de Jokhang gebracht werd. In de Ramoche werd het beeld neergezet dat de Nepalese prinses Tritsun (Brikuti) als bruidsschat meegebracht had (de eerste vrouw van koning Srongtsen Gampo). — De Potala — De basis voor de huidige Potala werd gelegd in de 7de eeuw met de bouw van een paleis door Songtsen Gampo. Binnen het witte paleis zijn nog een paar bouwsels uit die tijd over. Wanneer de naam Potala gegeven is, is niet zeker. De naam komt van Riwo Potala, de verblijfplaats(?) van Chenresig in Zuid-India. Chenresig (of Avalokitesvara) is de beschermheilige van Tibet en de koning werd gezien als een incarnatie ervan. — De vroege Dalai Lama's leefden in een paleis, genaamd de Ganden Potrang, dat was gelegen in het klooster Drepung. Toen onder de Vijfde Dalai Lama de geestelijke en wereldlijke macht verenigd werden, werd de Ganden Potrang ook de regeringszetel. Met de uitbreiding van de regering werd het paleis te klein. Er werd besloten een groot nieuw gebouw te bouwen dat zowel als paleis voor de Dalai Lama's zou dienen als de zetel van de regering zou vormen. Naar voorbeeld van een vroegere heerser Jangchub Gyaltsen (1302-1373) wilde de Vijfde het nieuwe paleis het uiterlijk en de stevigheid van een fort geven. Er werd gekozen voor de Marpo Ri (Rode Berg) die 130 m boven de vallei uitstijgt en dichtbij de twee belangrijkste kloosters Sera en Drepung ligt. — De Potala bestaat uit twee hoofd bouwwerken, de Potrang Karpo het Witte Paleis en de Potrang Marpo het Rode Paleis. In 1645 werden de plannen voor de Potrang Karpo vormgegeven. Drie jaar later was het negenverdiepingen tellende paleis klaar. De Grote Vijfde kwam in 1649 in de Potala wonen. — Na de dood van de Vijfde in 1682 werd Sangye Gyatso, die al regent was, de onbetwiste heerser van Tibet. Hij liet het Rode Paleis bouwen en de bestaande gebouwen uitbreiden. Alle religieuze functies vinden in dit paleis plaats. — Foto's gemaakt in opdracht van het Keizerlijk Russisch Aardrijkskundig Genootschap. Fotografen Norzunov en Tsybikof waren beide lamaisten en hadden toegang tot de verboden stad Lhasa. — Oplage: 12
