Poster Nelson Mandela free by Wild Plakken.
The poster ‘Nelson Mandela free’ was commissioned by the Dutch Anti-Apartheid Movement (AABN) and designed in 1978 to mark Mandela’s 60th birthday. At the time he was still being held prisoner on Robben Island.
The work is characteristic of the work of the Amsterdam collective Wild Plakken, comprised of Rob Schröder, Lies Ros and Frank Beekers. Their designs always consisted of a combination of text, images and personal comments. For twenty years Wild Plakken was arguably the most productive anti-apartheid designers group in the Netherlands. The photograph of Mandela was by Eli Weinberg, the “court” photographer to the ANC and the photograph of the militant youth was taken by photographer Joost Guntenaar.
