The Oranjestein country house, Laren, 1919. Architect: W.C. Hamdorff. Photographer: unknown.
Wouter Hamdorff got acquainted with the Amsterdamse School during the time he spent working with W.M. Dudok. Its free, individual modes of expression, the plastic qualities of its buildings, the imaginative forms and the traditional construction methods appealed to him and greatly influenced the country houses he built in the 1920s.
Oranjestein marks his transition from the smaller houses and studios he had designed in the previous decade, to large, expressionist, romantic country houses. To him, their shape and outline were of greater importance than optimum functionality. Whereas other country houses erected around 1920 in the same area have a stately character, Hamdorff’s Oranjestein is asymmetric, its ground plan marks a departure from the usual simple geometric figure and features an undulating roof: the entire house fits in with the natural, forested surroundings.
