- Description
- The print shows the complex of pleasure gardens of Enghien near Brussels. The plan is part of a series of prints commissioned by Nicolaas Visscher II (1649-1702) and engraved by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708). A labyrinth was an invariable attraction in such pleasure gardens. Walking over artfully designed pathways and between thick grown hedges visitors had to find the core of the labyrinth. There they were rewarded with a view on a beautiful fountain with sea nymph Amphitrite, wife of Neptune.
