Steam engineering factory
- Date of creation

- Description
- Officer Hendrik Hardes (1815-1871) could be seen as the father of the Japanese shipbuilding industry. He came to Japan in 1857 as engineer with the second navy contingent. On 19 July 1858, he started building a repair yard and a ‘Fabriek voor het stoomwezen’ (steam engineering factory) in Aka-no-ura, an area on the other side of the bay of Nagasaki. Hendrik Hardes remained in Japan until 1861 in order to complete the construction of the factory. After his departure, the complex was renamed Nagasaki Shipyard in 1871. This was the beginning of what was later to become the multinational Mitsubishi.
