- Johan George Spalburg, 1866-1917 was onderwijzer in dienst van de Evangelische Broedergemeente. In 1896 vertrok hij naar de Tapanahony om er een school op te zetten onder de ndyuka. Daar schreef hij twee boekjes over de zending en de bewoners van de Marowijnerivier en hield hij een dagboek bij dat veel later werd gepubliceerd onder titel De Tapanahony Djuka rond de eeuwwisseling (1979). Spalburgs werk is optimistisch van toon en wil bijdragen aan de kennis van land en volk.Tijdens een verblijf in Nederland schreef Spalburg het boekje 'Bruine Mina de koto-missi', de memoires van een vrouw uit de volksklasse. Het verhaal speelt in de jaren '70 en '80 van de 19e eeuw, de tijd dat het leven nog sterk bepaald werd door de maatschappelijke verhoudingen van de slaventijd. Mina leeft samen met de gouddelver Albert, met wie zij kinderen krijgt maar weinig geluk beleeft tot ze tenslotte huwt met een vrome weduwnaar. De wereld waarover Mina vertelt is vol bijgeloof en volksmythologie. Oude geboden, verboden en taboes worden gedetailleerd beschreven waardoor het boekje een belangrijk en levendig tijdsdocument is.
