Netherlands, Amsterdam. Albert Magnus 1679
Albert Magnus was without doubt the most famous binder of his time. Letters and archive articles have shown that he was commissioned by important collectors such as Michiel van der Grijp and Frederik van Loon. Also Daniel Elsevier called Magnus a suitable binder when Nicolaas Heinsius wanted to give Louis XIV a copy of his Virgil edition as a gift.
Magnus’ work was very popular and highly valued. Despite this, it was not until the present-day that his bindings could be attributed to him with any certainty by comparing stamps. Bookbinders did not sign their work in the 17th century.
