Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, ofte verandering der Surinaamsche insecten' was published in 1705 and is a milestone in natur history publishing and book illustrations. Maria Sybilla Merian was a German-Dutch artist who pioneered the lively depiction of plants and insects. The plates and short, readable descriptions of the metamorphosis of Surinam insects are all based on her personal researches in Surinam, where she explored the surroundings of plantations. Merian and her daughters oversaw the whole publication process by themselves, from research, illustration, engraving, coloring to publishing the text.
