Folly

A curious collection of cartoons, poems and comedies about the speculations that began in France and England to reach the Netherlands in the beginning of 1720. It was an ‘empty’ trade, not substantiated by any merchandise and consisted of converting obligations into shares than were then speculated in. The collection includes the memorandums of association of the many commercial, industrial, shipping, fishing and insurance companies that had been established to meet the prevailing speculation craze. In the autumn of that same year the entire market collapsed, entailing the bankruptcy of numerous companies and private persons.
