On view are the drafts for the lettering of the postal trucks designed on behalf of the Dutch Post Office PTT. They are part of the designs made in the 1980s for the PTT house style. This house style was created by the agencies Total Design and Tel Design (Studio Dumbar as from 1977).
As early as the late 1960s, these agencies were commissioned to design a house style for the Dutch Post Office PTT. Each agency weighed all the aspects of a new house style independently of the other. Total Design’s sketches on view here date back to these early years. A final design was developed on the base of the two proposals and introduced three years later.
The outstanding feature of the new house style was the consistent use of standard colors for the PTT’s four main activities: red for the mail, blue for the monetary transactions, green for telecommunication and brown for central management activities.
Lettering was standardized for both the stationery and the vehicles, as well as the interior and exterior of the post offices. The house style remained in use until 1989.
