Het gezin Ter Berg vestigde zich in 1916 in Assen, toen vader Izak Hartog een baan kreeg als kantoorbediende bij de lakenhandel van zijn oom. In zijn dagboek, bijgehouden vanaf 1940, beschrijft Benno ter Berg de Duitse inval en de gevolgen die dit voor hem persoonlijk had. Daarnaast schrijft hij uitgebreid over zijn voorliefde voor de natuur en zijn activiteiten als lid van de Nederlandse Jeugdbond voor Natuurstudie. In augustus 1942 krijgt Benno een oproep voor een werkkamp. Via Ruinen en Westerbork komt hij terecht in Auschwitz, waar hij eind september van dat jaar is omgekomen.
