Seven centuries of Zuiderzee history > Peperzolder
Take a look in the reconstructed Peperzolder (Pepper Attic), an eighteenth-century Dutch East India Company warehouse. At that time the trade company imported pepper, other spices and textiles from the East Indies.
In the attic of the Peperhuis (Pepper House) the valuable merchandise was carefully kept under lock and key. The governors of the Dutch East India Company feared that somebody would make off with the valuable goods. Therefore, whoever wanted to work in the warehouse had to pay a deposit. Nevertheless jobs in the warehouse were hugely popular. The warehouse master even signed an agreement that he would never ask for a pay rise.
The images give an impression of the interior of the Peperzolder and a number of objects tell the story of the Eastern Trade.
