Dutch herring was an important export commodity in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.  Herring fishing, trade, and the various subsidiary industries took advantage of the large market in the Baltic and Northwest Germany. North sea herring fishing brought much prosperity to the Netherlands.

In this section the objects are on view that have to do with fishing, preserving and the various activities on shore. A lot of attention is given to Enkhuizen, around 1630 the largest fishing town in Holland. The three herrings in the town's coat of arms recall this former source of prosperity. The glory, wealth and splendour of this period are still visible in the town's churches and other buildings.
