The Linschoten Vereeniging was founded in 1908 by a number of historians and former seafarers. To this very day, the association is devoted to the publication of historic travel reports.

A new volume appears almost annually in a series that already includes more than a hundred titles. The series published by the Linschoten Vereeniging is a unique collection of texts taken from the original publications. Most of these texts are very rare indeed and hardly accessible to the public. The Linschoten-Vereeniging’s early publications have become quite rare as well in the meantime; no more than a handful of them are available through antique booksellers. A few years ago, the Board of Directors of the Linschoten Vereeniging and the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (Royal Library) took the initiative to digitize the first fifty-nine volumes of the series (published between 1909 and 1955) to ensure their availability to the public.

The republished travel reports of the early modern era – more than 20,000 pages and 200 bound or loose-leaf maps – include annotations and accompanying texts. All in all, the volumes include more than 800 illustrations.
