Nynke van Hichtum, writer of children’s books in Dutch and Frisian
A collection of the Tresoar
Afke’s Tiental stands as a monument among Dutch youth literature. This book about the life of farm labourers in the northern Dutch province of Friesland was published in 1903 and has since been translated into more than ten languages. Almost as famous as the book is its author Nynke van Hichtum, the pen name of Sjoukje Bokma de Boer (1860 – 1939). Those who do not know her from her books may have had the opportunity to make her acquaintance through the film Nynke, een liefdesgeschiedenis. The film about her life was made in 2001 by the Dutch director Pieter Verhoeff and was awarded a Gouden Kalf at the Dutch Film Festival.
Original handwritten letters and manuscripts by Sjoukje Bokma de Boer have been included in this Collection. Moreover, there are some forty book jackets and several photographs of the writer to look at. All these items are part of the S. M. D. Bokma de Boer collection that belongs to Tresoar, the Frisian Historical and Literary Centre.
