Modern manuscripts from the National Library of the Netherlands > Jan Engelman

In 1926, the Brazilian singer Vera Janacopoulos sent the poet Jan Engelman into raptures. After having expressed his admiration for her in various literary periodicals, Engelman wrote the poem Vera Janacopoulos (ca 1930), of which the beginning alone (“Ambrosia wat vloeit mij aan? / Uw schedelveld is koeler maan / en alle appels blozen”) aroused sneers from traditional poets and critics.

The poem was published for the first time in the volume Sine Nomine (1930). The manuscript of the poem and the volume of verse are now included in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek collection thanks to a bequest by René Rademacher Schorer.
