Come and see! Puppetry in pictures. > Bunraku
Traditional Japanese puppet play, often needing up to three persons to manipulate one single puppet. Completely clothed in black, the manipulators are clearly visible to the audience. The face of the person manipulating the head of the puppet is exposed, but his helpers’ heads are covered by black gauze hoods. Thanks to an inner mechanism, the face of a Bunraku character can bear different expressions. Brows can be raised and a devilish grin can suddenly appear on the face of an innocent virgin. The puppets are 90 to 120 cm tall.
