Japanese demands > Digitization

In total, 186 journeys to the court were made between 1609 and 1850. In some years, no journey was undertaken, although gifts were sent to the Shogun. The demands covering the period from 1750 to 1862 have been digitized for this website.

As far as the other years are concerned:
- either no record of the demands has been kept
- or the documents were in such a bad condition that it was impossible to digitize them (1844 and 1854)
- or records of the demands are kept in archives other than those of the Dutch Factory in Japan {see the Overgekomen Brieven en Papieren [Letters and Papers that have come over from the archives of the Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC), although that section is difficult to access}.

It is possible to reconstruct missing lists of demands by researching the accounts and inventories in the archives of the Dutch Factory in Japan.
