Vier satyrische historische portretten / door Romein de Hooghe?

1672 is known as the Disaster Year because the Dutch Republic was invaded from all sides by France, England and the dioceses of Cologne and Münster. This led the Dutch illustrator and graphic artist Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) to make caricatures of the leaders of all four enemies.
This print shows the French King Louis XIV. The caption made it perfectly clear how De Hooghe foresaw the outcome: the lion would defeat the fleur-de-lis (lily).
