Netherlands, Theo Molkenboer. 1899
This binding is a good example of the changes that were taking place at the end of the 19th century in the arts. In England, William Norris propagated simplicity and frugality as a reaction to the, according to him, disastrous road to merely following historic styles. Decorations should stem from function of the object. The decorative artist Theo Molkenboer had already written about the desired modernization in 1896, in the journal De boekband (The Bookbinding).
Molkenboer choose a historic technique for this binding, in which the bindings on which the book block has been sewn, is visible in the joint. In accordance with the views at the time, these constructive elements are part of the decoration. Also characteristic was the chosen decorative technique. At the end of the 19th century, interest in the Netherlands for ornaments and techniques from the Far East grew, in particular, those from Indonesia. Experiments were conducted using the traditional batik techniques, but on parchment. This binding, proudly signed and dated by Molkenboer on the back cover, shows that Dutch artists managed to develop a distinctive art style within the changes taking place in the arts in Europe.
