Description
Among the printed price lists of plants in the Fagel collection, there is this design for a flower bed in the garden of Francois Fagel's house in The Hague. It is from October 16, 1718 and shows accurately what species were planted where. The design may have been influenced by Jean de Vivier’s work, Le Jardin de Hollande (Leiden 1714), a manual giving advice on gardening in the French style, with a chapter on the cultivation of tulips. Species of tulip such as the Bizarden (yellow ground with brown or other coloured markings) are described in this manual.
