Mijne weinig beteekende rymen (My undistinguished rhymes)
Anthony Winkler Prins (1817-1908)
When Dutch people nowadays hear the name of the Mennonite minister Anthony Winkler Prins, they immediately think of the well known Dutch encyclopedia that bears his name. Winkler Prins was the general editor of its first edition (1870-1882), but he also wrote prose and poetry. With regard to his literary merits, Winkler Prins was extremely modest: “Voor eerst dank ik U voor de onderscheiding, die Ge iets mijner weinig beteekenende rymen hebt waardig gekeurd […] Niemand weet beter dan ik, hoe weinig waarde myne verzen hebben.” (Firstly, I thank you for the honor you have so graciously bestowed upon some of my undistinguished rhymes […] Nobody knows better than I of what little value my verses truly are[...])
