Naar de ziel heidensch en mytisch (Pagan and mythical according to the soul)
Adriaan Roland Holst (1888-1976)
In 1940, after a favorable review of his collection Onderweg (On the way) Adriaan Roland Holst, the ’Prince of Poets’ as he was called in the Netherlands, goes into more detail regarding some aspects of his work: “Wat een afwijzen van het Christendom aangaat, voel ik een zeker voorbehoud. Het komt mij wel eens voor, dat ik naar het hart tot het christelijke neid, maar naar de ziel heidensch (in den zin van voor christelijk) en mytisch ben. Gij hebt dan toch in zoover gelijk, als in mijn werk de ziel het hart overstemt, zooals […] de zee een eiland overstemt.” (As to the rejection of Christianity, I feel a certain reservation. Sometimes it seems to me that my heart inclines towards Christianity, but in my soul I incline towards paganism (in the pre-Christian sense) and the mythical. So, you are right, insofar as the soul is louder than the heart in my work, as […] the sea is louder than an island.).
Letter to J.A. Rispens, 17 October 1941.
