The first lengthy poem written by Verwey was called Persephone, after the Greek goddess of the underworld. With Persephone, the young Verwey presented himself within the Movement of the Eighties as a poet to be reckoned with. The poem was printed in 1885. The Albert Verwey collection has four different manuscript versions.
