Two young Ainu girls with tattooed faces
Between the age of 11 and 21, Ainu girls were given a blue tattoo around their mouth. The tattoo was applied by their grandmother or an aunt and protected the girls against evil forces which could enter by way of mouth or nose. Traditionally, the Ainus lived mainly in Hokkaido, the northern island of the Japanese archipelago. They spoke a different language and had different customs than the inhabitants of other parts of Japan.
