- De Albert Cuypmarkt, waar dit Turkse echtpaar zijn inkopen doet, is de plek waar alle nationaliteiten uit Amsterdam letterlijk samenstromen. De etenswaren in de kramen zijn daar de getuigen van. In de Turkse cultuur is de vrouw ondergeschikt aan de man. De man houdt contact met de buitenwereld en voert de gesprekken. De vrouw wendt zich af en slaat de ogen neer. Vrouwen hebben weinig met mannen te maken, zij leven en werken vooral in een vrouwengemeenschap. Wel geven de mannen de grenzen aan waarbinnen de vrouwen moeten leven. Binnen een moslimhuwelijk is de echtgenoot verplicht zijn vrouw zo goed mogelijk te onderhouden wat betreft voedsel, kleding en huisvesting. Gehoorzaamheid van de vrouw aan de man wil zeggen dat zij erkent dat de man verantwoordelijk is voor het gezin.
