Dubbele tulp (double tulip)
In the seventeenth century, the tulip was a rare and costly flower, much in demand among a small group of collectors. In 1637 this resulted in the ‘tulip mania’, with prices spiraling out of control. The bubble burst and prices plummeted, triggering the world’s first ever commodities crash. Of exceptional interest is a set of tiles found in Hoorn, on which the tulips are painted over a height of two tiles. Because of the outstanding quality of the painting, it may be assumed that these tiles had been ordered as a lot for a very special purpose.
