Feyenoord Stadium, Rotterdam, 1934-1936. Architects: J.A. Brinkman and L.C. van der Vlugt. Photograapher: unknown.
At first, Brinkman and Van der Vlugt did not have much confidence in the potential for success of this large-scale project: the Rotterdam Feyenoord soccer club’s ambition knew no bounds in a time when the whole world was in a deep economic depression.
Nevertheless, support from prominent citizens, industrialists and shipping magnates won the architects over. The stadium was erected around a steel skeleton. In those days, steel was a popular building material: workers were cheaper than materials and, as a result, preference was given to labor-intensive constructions. The architects let themselves be inspired by stadiums in the United States, where steel was a major component. The stadium’s flowing lines and open character won it many accolades. It is as if the upper stands float over the lower ones with a ring of light in between.
